Calgon...Take me away!

I'm not gonna sugar-coat it...I need a vacation!

Remember the cramp I got in the 5th mile? Well, it turned into a pulled muscle today. I was going about my business, cleaning a pool, when my pole retracted and I had to make a smooth move to keep from going for a dip. A cool dip, for that matter. It's been a long time since I've not-so-gracefully projected myself into the watery deep.

I, actually, do get a vacation in a week, but NOW would be better. Oh well, I guess that's not going to happen so I thought I would relive an old one. Let's set the Way-Back Machine to about six years ago. Right about this same time of year, I believe. We'll be traveling northward to the beautiful, rolling vineyards of Napa Valley. Taking in the wonderful aromas and vistas that make you want to stay forever.

Join me, won't you?

Run, Forrest, Run!

On Sunday, yesterday, I did the Calabasas Classic 10K . It was a trial run to see if I had it in me and if I have a chance of finishing the half marathon I'm signed up to do in January....YIKES!!! I've done a 10K before, but I believe it's been like 20 years. I only had three goals going in.

1. Finish
2. Don't be last
3. Don't know how many people are behind you (You know, like, there are only five behind me)

A few years ago I did the Disney 5K and there were a sea of people. You just get lost in the middle somewhere and go about your business with no stress. So, I was a little worried when I got to the starting line, because it didn't seem like there were that many people. Great...now there is a definite possibility I could be last. On my walks, I WALK. Sometimes, I even meander.

When I did the 5K, I surprised myself and jogged the entire race. I think I finished in about 35 minutes. Being at Disneyland with all the people and getting to run through, well, DISNEYLAND!!!!, it was exciting and exhilarating. I wasn't sure how it would go this time.

I had looked up the race course before I came and they had a "course elevation" graph. Heavens!! It looked like a set of jagged teeth! The Disneyland course was completely flat. Oh, well. I decided that I needed to stop comparing these two races.

So, the race starts and I start jogging....UPHILL! I start getting winded right away and I'm thinking there is no way I'm keeping THIS pace up. So, I find a short-term goal point to stop and walk. Time for a new strategy. Take advantage of the downhills.

This race is just doing the 5K twice. Meaning, the first half is the same as the second half. A little boring, but you know what to expect around the next corner. Into the second mile, I am lapped by the first three runners of the race. When I get to the turn-around, the clock says 41 minutes. The winner of the race finished in 31 minutes and I'm just getting to the half-way point! ONWARD!!

Thankfully, I had an Ipod with headphones and somewhere in the last of the 4th mile this song came on that inspired me to pick up my pace. So, I was jogging and singing in my head like a lunatic, but then I came to my senses and thought, I can't keep this up. I'll kill myself! Then I reached the 5th mile and I got a cramp in my leg.....SEE!!!!!

Well, people, I survived! I finished the race in 1:23:52.6. I came in 202nd overall (31 people behind me) and 24th in my age group. My average time per mile was 13:32. Not killer numbers, but good enough for me.

I'm proud of myself and Billy's proud of me. And that's all I need. Well, that and a shower!

Today's mission

Yes, I can!!!!
I was not thinking about my blog at the time, so most of my pictures are the ones I took on my phone that I was sending to my family to update them on my progress.

Look, Ma, no eyes!

I'm in Calabasas...you KNOW I saw celebrities!

I'm Batman!
The next one is a bad picture. I promise there are two people, not one with two arms. Sorry, I was in a race.

Maybe my final time would have been better if I didn't take so many pictures. I can't help it. It kept my mind occupied.

Since I'm a little gimpy, I gave myself the day off. No walk today.

The show must go on

Today we had rain...glorious rain!!! I must admit that I'm crazy about that wonderful stuff. It's cold and crisp and so refreshing. It also waters my lawn...no irrigation, so it's a freebie! And, while I have an outdoor job, rain does not keep me home and off the streets. I go out there and just get wet. Sometimes even soaked. Because the show must go on! And, yes, I'm just that dedicated. Unless, of course, it is coming down in buckets which doesn't happen very often around here.

At first, I was going to go in the direction of fountains for today's topic because it had to do with water, but instead I decided that I would actually go straight to the source itself...precipitation. I realized that I had some old pics that were rain-related and since today WAS raining, why not take some fresh footage.

As I got the creative juices flowing, I took a bunch of shots out the front windshield. When I got home and reviewed them, I thought they looked very abstract and artsy. Therefore, I am putting on my very first art show, so to speak.

Now, if you are one of those people that can't appreciate a picture unless it's crystal clear and perfectly in focus, you may not be a prospective client of mine. Just stand back like you're in a museum and ponder what you think the artist was trying to portray. What deep thoughts are conveyed by each brushstroke or camera click. Work with me here people!!!

This first one was taken in Napa in 2006

These next ones are today's Windshield Art....for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

I believe I've found a new medium

It's kind of Impressionist, don't ya think?

A little more modern

I call this one "Bright and Cheery"
I hope that you enjoyed the show. Now, onto more traditional pictures.

When we were in Portland earlier this year, it only truly rained one day. Of course, it was the day we traveled the farthest. I'm a little jealous of my son and daughter-in-law that they live in such a beautifully green and gorgeous place. I really do believe that I would be very happy in Portland.

Portland Rain
Occasionally, we do get a fair amount of rain here in Southern California (don't believe the song). This particular day I was stranded at home unable to accomplish my daily route. As you can see, the water had risen to the top of the curb...quite the flood for these parts.

Today's rain catcher, tomorrow's dinner...just kidding. Did you know that squirrel is listed in the Weight Watcher's point guide? All I have to say to that is EEEWWW!

The next couple of pics are part of a bridal shoot I did.

Ready for rain
Beautiful
I'm just missing a rainbow picture. I'll have to get on that right away.

Here kitty, kitty, kitty

So far, I've dedicated my blog to the beloved dog, the bird and even the bee. My feline friends need some equal time here. I am a total cat lover. I have a favorite type, too - The Brown Tabby. I'm not exclusive to this brown tabby, but I've had enough of the same cat that I have a tough time telling them apart when I look back at old pictures. Is that bad?

Cats are unique little creatures that can take you or leave you. They are, for the most part, not as needy as their canine counterpart. Maybe that is why I like them. I'm a bit of an independent soul. I guess that's how me and the kitties roll. Some people do not like cats. I'm not quite sure what is wrong with these people because I happen to think they are wonderful. I love me some kitty cats. I currently do not have a furry feline. Someday, but not now.

I find that they are mostly camera-shy, but I got some to pose for me.

This beautiful kitty was hanging outside the main drag in Los Olivos. So aloof.

Go ahead and take your picture. I will not look at you.
Such pretty markings and gorgeous eyes.

Soft kitty, warm kitty. Little ball of fur.
Such a sweet face!
